Tips for Healthy Summer Swimming
Summer is on the way, and that means more opportunities to swim and play in the pool. When we think about water safety often the first thing that pops into mind are swimming in areas with lifeguards and not swimming during severe weather like lightening. With the increase in bather loads at many area pools, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) also asks that we use prudence, good sense and healthy habits for our health and safety as well as others.
The CDC recommends the following guidelines/habits for adults and children to protect yourself and others while contributing to maintaining a healthy pool environment:
- Take a soap shower before entering the pool
- Avoid drinking pool water while swimming
- If you are ill with a contagious disease or illness, refrain from swimming to allow your body time to get well and avoid exposing others
- Take children to the bathroom often
- For young children in diapers, change diapers in a designated bathroom area, not at the poolside, and use plastic pants over a disposable or cloth diaper
- Use plenty of sunscreen, particularly after swimming, when swimming at outside venues
Thank you for helping us maintain a safe and healthy pool environment for all patrons. For additional information, contact Robin Feickert at 651- 255-4762 or rfeickert@stpauljcc.org.

Please keep our pools healthy this summer!
The St. Paul JCC's aquatics department, Camp Butwin staff and maintenance department work hard all year round to provide our members with well-maintained swimming pools. Please practice the following "PLEAs" to help protect yourself and others from Recreational Water Illnesses.
- PLEASE do not swallow pool water
- PLEASE practice good hygiene. Minnesota State Health Department guidelines require nude, soap showers before entering the pool. Wash your hands after using the toilet or changing diapers.
- PLEASE take your children on bathroom breaks or check diapers often. Waiting to hear "I have to go" may mean that it's too late.
- PLEASE do not swim when you have intestinal illnesses
Feel free to contact Robin Feickert, Aquatics director, at 651-255-4762 or rfeickert@stpauljcc.org with questions.
